Our society is run by whispers, whispers on the internet, Twitter whispers , whispers at the workplace. The whispers set one person against another, divides one group from another, separates this person from that. Someone whispers that someone else is a threat to me, and if they are a good whisperer, I listen worriedly. The whisperer becomes my friend for telling me, and the whispered about is made the object of suspicion. After a while, there is one person at the centre of a society or organisation of mistrust and suspicion.
In the role play we ran on health, whispers into the ear of the professional health worker activated so many tensions even the patient was suspect. While the role pay uncovered the real people who were holding the core values of care without any recognition or respect for the voluntary work they were doing. Global Synapses wants to be a place of genuine conversation towards uncovering the real values within groups and organisations. But the current trend of the invisible whisperers, sowing division in those around them, has to be lessened in its power.
To our surprise in the last two years, with Brexit and Trump but also in previously trusted workplaces, the surprising fact has been shown that if one sets off resonances of mistrust through Twitter or chatter, then this becomes far more powerful than the values which everyone had stood united behind before. Global Synapses cannot exist in isolation of this tendency to run a hidden power over a population divided from each other.
As well as coming together in the great projects we are doing, we also want to share the smallest whispers that have made us uneasy about someone else, or another group, or another facet of learning, without there being any direct evidence given for what we hear.
We are running a survey, as follows: Who has whispered to you; how did you feel threatened, what was the separation that resulted, and what is the unity that you would wish to see? Or has the world whispered in a positive way that made something happen? We respect the confidentiality of your offering, keeping any statements anonymous and only interpret trends in the network of whispers!
Please whisper me your story.
No whisper is too quiet to matter!
